Greetings Everyone For the last 2 years I have used my familys local book store as a base for a wide variety of local charity projects as we have always been strong believers in taking part in the community. Our friends and customers have helped us support great causes such as our Pages4Paws program that donated 50% of any pet related book sales to local non profit pet rescues, Operation Paperback where we sent many boxes of books to our military serving over seas, Rescued Beads For Rescue Pets which has supported several individual pets medical needs as well as currently funding the Kingman Pet Connection WAHS Featured Pet drawings, Keep Art Alive which collects unneeded art and craft supplies and then distributes them to local elementary school teachers, as well as taking place in several events through the year. Sadly the City of Kingman has determined that our 55 year old historic building, which once housed the local newspaper until my family sold it in 1968, and which has been in retail non stop for its 55 year history with Dons Office Products renting space from us and now our store, 5th Street Books which opened the next business day after Dons closed, suddenly can not do business without the addition of 2 ada handicap bathrooms, regardless of the fact that we have no employees and serve no food or beverages and in the past 2 years have had about 4 people total ask to use a bathroom, none of whom had an issue accessing the bathrooms we have. To bring this old, historic building up to code, sadly is beyond what we can afford at this time as it is estimated to cost $10,000-$20,000 and could require a complete addition added to the building as the foundations were poured in 4 foot thick reinforced concrete to handle the load of the printing press for the newspaper. Because of this they have stripped our business license and closed our doors so another old building in the historic district will now sit empty until something can be figured out but at the cost to do everything, it is well beyond us at this time. Rescued Beads For Rescue Pets is in the process of finding a new location to set up shop, and until then, will continue to support local pet rescue as best we can through online sales and other fundraising such as rummage sales and craft fairs. We will also continue to back the Featured Pet program in this group to help these pets at the shelter. This may be a hit to local small business but they certainly cant keep us down :)
