Guido Trinidad hitting 375 for a 15#pr. Coaching elite athletes, especially ones coming into the later portions of their careers, often comes with making radical changes in the mind state of the athlete. In order to have that happen, athletes must trust in the process and in the decisions a coach makes. For athletes in the sport of fitness that can be very difficult because many of them train in the same way. High frequency, high variation, high intensity, and uncompromising to that mentality until they get hurt or stop making progress in relation to the field. Guido is one of the most hard working people Ive ever met on the planet and very intelligent about training and his body. But, hes an older athlete with a huge training history, a father, a husband, a gym owner, and the creator of The Wodapalooza Fitness Festival (which TTT will be bringing a lot of athletes to in early January). So, leading into this off season, I recommended an extremely reduced training frequency. He trusted me to drop the volume SUBSTANTIALLY to four single sessions per week which were almost exclusively pure strength training, simple gymnastics progressions, and moderate to low intensity aerobic days. As well, we worked on some of the structural limitations exposed by the regionals this year that caused him to barely miss a return trip to California to The Crossfit Games. In spite of spending tons of time in prep for his annual competition, running his business, and trying to balance life as a 34 year old athlete in an increasingly younger sport, he is still hitting prs. As a major transition point approaches in his life, were making a run one more time to keep him healthy and confident to expose the talent he still has in his machine of a body.
