Gyalshing Sep’18 (IPR): Disaster Risk Reduction Day was observed all over the State today. To mark the day, District Collectorate West organised a programme at the Community Hall involving large numbers of School students, college students, teachers, members of Gyalshing Nagar Panchayats, DC, Sr. SP, District administrative officials and NGOs. On this day in the year 2011, the devastating earthquake struck the State claiming lives and properties. Following the earthquake, the State Government had given the instructions to the technical departments that all the constructions must now be made earthquake resistant. The State Government has also declared this day as Disaster Risk Reduction Day with a view to create awareness and sensitize the people about disaster management and also preparing citizen more aware and resilient towards disaster. The District Collector Mrs.Aishwarya gave an informative insight of the precautionary measures on disaster and its management. She added that disaster is uncertain therefore everyone should be well prepared and step ahead for safety when the disaster occurs. She mentioned that today’s programme broadly focused on the school children for wider dissemination of awareness regarding disaster preparedness and mitigation. The DC also felt the need of interactions in the schools to better prepare the students in facing any calamities in future. Earlier, she also read out the message of the Chief Minister of Sikkim on the Disaster Risk Reduction Day addressed to the people. ADC West Mrs Yishey Yongda spoke on the sanitation and zero west waste management programme being carried out by the RMDD. She also focused on the best possible effort to minimize the waste management for safer future. The DPO West, Mr Jigme Bhutia in his address focused on the massive awareness, sensitization regarding disaster preparedness to be created amongst the students, who can relay the message to the house. Dr Gyamtso Bhutia of District Hospital Gyalshing presented a power point presentation on first aid techniques during disaster and post disaster. Mr Keshav Koirala, Asst. Disaster Management Specialist, City Project Coordinator UNDP spoke at length about the importance of day and deliberated on the preparedness, prevention and mitigation and how to act and react during the hour of crisis through his presentation. The programme also witnessed the techniques and methods to be adopted by search and rescue during fire disaster presented by Fire Department officials Gyalshing. The winners of essay competitions and on the spot painting competitions amongst the school students were also given prizes by the DC and other dignitaries. Earlier, the students of colleges and schools also participated in a rally carrying placards stating do’s and don’t during natural disaster conducted from Government Sr. Sec. School Kyongsa culminated at Community Hall. Mr Suraj Gurung SDM Gyalshing placed the welcome address and vote of thanks was proposed by DPO Gyalshing.
