HAPPY CAMP FIRE UPDATE News Release Zone 1 (Happy Camp-Seiad) Fire Information: 530-493-1510 Zone 2 (Happy Camp-Ft Jones) Fire Information: 530-468-1510 Website: Inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4078 Facebook: on.fb.me/1snfZFQ Twitter: @HappyCampFires Email: HappyCampComplexinfo@gmail Happy Camp Complex Zone 2 Morning Update September 3, 2014 Size: 71,727 acres total for the complex Containment: 15 percent for the complex Date Started: August 11, 2014 Estimated Cost to Date: $41 million Total Personnel: 2,703 Committed Resources: 77 crews, 22 helicopters, 151 engines, 21 dozers, 27 water tenders, 29 mules, 8 horses Evacuations and Road Closures: Due to increased fire activity from the Happy Camp Complex, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office is issued a mandatory evacuation order effective 6 p.m. on Tues., Sept. 2, 2014. The following areas are included in the order: areas on the north side of Highway 96 between Scott River Road and Seiad Creek Road, this also includes areas south of Johnny O’Neil Ridge and East of Seiad Creek Road. Residents may not be able to reenter the evacuation area until the fire danger has passed. Sheriff’s Deputies along with the United States Forest Service are going door to door to notify residents they must evacuate the area. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department will be patrolling 24 hours in the evacuated areas. At this time it is not known how long the evacuations will last. As soon as it is safe for residents to return to their homes notices will be given. Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place along Scott River Road from Bridge Flat to the intersection of Hwy 96 and all areas south of Hwy 96 between Scott River Road and Cade Summit. People in need of assistance with livestock or for additional information contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department at (530) 841-2900. Expect delays, with pilot cars escorting travelers through parts of an 11-mile section from Seiad Valley to Scott River Road, where the fire is active. Hwy 96 was closed for several hours yesterday because of fire activity; traffic may be stopped again if fire conditions warrant. CodeRED Emergency Alert System: Siskiyou County residents are welcome and encouraged to enter their contact information for home, business and mobile phones so they may be contacted by the system in the event of an emergency. It is important for residents and business customers to register, especially if they use unlisted numbers, cell phones or VOIP. Those who do not register their address and phone number may not be notified with CodeRED in the case of an emergency. Registration is confidential, free and easy. Weather Alert: The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 11 p.m. today due to a combination of strong winds and low humidity. Northeast to east winds 5-10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph are expected. Humidity dropped significantly from 50 percent to seven percent this morning. These extremely dry conditions will likely result in increased fire behavior and large growth of the fire. Zone 2 Fire Information: The fire moderated last night around 10 p.m. due to increased humidity. The fire backed down to Scott River Road behind the Scott River Lodge overnight. The structure protection efforts made over the last few days paid off as no structures were reported lost. The hose lays and sprinklers around homes and structures in the area were used effectively. Forest Closures and Restrictions: Roads, trails and lands within and adjacent to the Happy Camp and July complexes, as well as the Beaver Fire, are closed to protect public and firefighter safety. This includes those sections of the Pacific Crest Trail within closure areas. Maps and descriptions of closed areas are available at Klamath National Forest offices in Yreka, Fort Jones, Happy Camp and Macdoel. Safety: Boaters on the Klamath River should take extreme care in the fire area, and if possible should avoid this area as smoky conditions are likely to persist. If heavy smoke is present, people who are more vulnerable should take precautions and avoid prolonged or heavy outside activity. People should keep in mind smoke conditions can change quickly. Individuals at risk should consult their healthcare provider for evaluation of their best course of action and protective measures. A Clean Air Respite Center is located at the Karuk Tribe Senior Nutrition Center in Happy Camp (64101 Second Avenue). The center is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and will remain open longer if needed due to smoky conditions. Air Quality: A mostly northeasterly flow will push the smoke to the southwest impacting the communities of the Lower Klamath, Salmon and Trinity River drainages.
