HAS THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND CHANGED THE ENGLISH ALPHABAT? Even an Ariogbo that is born today will tell you that the alphabet that comes after ‘U’ is ‘V’, but the same cannot be said for humans in Sierra Leone. Let me give you a gist as to the answers you should expect from humans in Sierra Leone if you ask them what the next alphabet is after the alphabet ‘U’. Depending on the political orientations of the individuals you will ask, these are the answers you should expect. Instead of the correct answer of ‘after U na V’, you will hear playful answers like: After U na U, After you na Gbabo, After you na Mohamed Kamarainba, After U na Ernest, After U na Ariogbo, After U na Youth. Hmm!!! Illiteracy is indeed a deadly disease. It is even more deadly than HIV, because at least I have not seen an HIV positive Ariogbo. There is no logic in saying ‘After U na U’. The English Alphabet frowns against this; the national constitution of Sierra Leone does not allow this, and above all this assertion is confusing the school going children. Just yesterday, I came across two children coming from school and arguing over the English alphabet. The one was very sure that ‘After U na V’ as that was what the school teacher taught them, while the other was insisting that ‘After U na U’ as the President has ‘approved’ that. Even when I tried to explain to the latter pupil that ‘After U na V’, he was never willing to listen and learn, as according to him: “Ernest Koroma said After U na U”. I bet that this confusion will not continue. Sierra Leone deserves better. Even the Queen of England will not permit this unacceptable change in the English Alphabet. ‘After U na V, nor to U’. This will never work even in politics. Politics should also follow the trend of ‘After U na V’. So if the ‘U’ alphabet in Sierra Leone politics now symbolizes President Koroma (whose name actually has no semblance of U, which, in the Ariogbo world symbolizes UNSUCCESSFUL), then V represents VANISH or VACATE. You want to know the synonyms of VANISH? Okay, I will tell you. Vanish is the same as DISSAPEAR, EVAPORATE, FADE AWAY, PETER OUT, GO, BECOME EXTINCT, DISSOLVE and even DIE OUT. So if President Koroma is ‘U’ then after his second term in office he should just V (Vanish) as we W (Welcome) a new President.
