HEATH LEDGER Week Day 1 Movie pick of the day THE PATRIOT (2000) – Heath Ledger starred in his first high profile movie with this riveting action/drama set during the Revolutionary War. He plays Gabriel Martin, eldest son of Benjamin Martin (played by Mel Gibson), who fought in the French-Indian War, but now lives the peaceful life as a farmer in colonial South Carolina. Benjamin wants no part of this upcoming war with the British but is drawn into by the savage tactics of Colonel William Tavington (a terrific Jason Isaacs) who burns Benjamin’s house to the ground and harms one of his other children. Benjamin is unleashed and with Gabriel by his side joins the other men to form a rebellion against the British. This is a stirring drama with plenty of action but also some dramatic family moments. I thought Heath was very good in the pivotal role of Gabriel who is at constant odds with his father on everything from fighting to falling in love. The rousing rally the troops scene will remind you of Gibson’s own Braveheart. The Patriot is a very well crafted movie and features a terrific supporting cast including Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper and Tom Wilkinson. My rating: 8 out of 10 Benjamin Martin: Before this war is over, Im going to kill you. Colonel William Tavington: Why wait?
