Large hail, and winds of 70 miles and hour plus, a number of homes, vehicles, crops, trees and landscape were heavily damaged by the storm, the National Weather Service still has not officially determined if this was a in fact a tornado or microburst. Thursday as residents and neighbors helped one another clean up, Las Animas County Emergency Manager, Kim Chavez; Sheriff Jim Casias; Hoehne Fire Chief Dave Bacharach; Hoehne Volunteer Firefighter, Darren Kolakowski, along with Riley Frazee, State Office of Emergency Management and Jennifer Stark, National Weather Service of Pueblo went out to various parts of the county to assess the damages of the storm. She will be researching archived data of yesterday’s weather patterns for this area at the office in Pueblo searching for more information regarding whether the storm was a tornado or microburst. According to a press release from Chavez, who also is Las Animas County’s Public Information Officer said, “Several homes and vehicles were damaged by heavy winds and hail. Several trees and power poles were knocked down due to the powerful wind gusts. Also a fire was ignited when a transformer fell causing significant damages to area trees and property. The fire was extinguished.” Sheriff Casias told #TRINIDADLASANIMASCOUNTYNEWS, “We can confirm that one driver was injured, the large hail broke the window in his car, he was taken to Mt. San Rafael Hospital and release with minor injuries. County officials will be assessing damage and report on if there was enough damage to get help for #LASANIAMSCOUNTY #HOEHNE residents, by applying for a natural disaster declaration, which gives funding through the state. Chavez added, “As a precaution residents should always be aware of the weather surrounding your area and be prepared to either take shelter or evacuate the premises. If you are not on the reverse 911 call list, you are encouraged to stop by the Justice Center and sign your phone numbers up, including your cell phone number, with the Sheriff.”
