HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK! Today was an exceptionally special day at Diemersfontein!. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA - their awesome team, and the phenomenal work they do - we were able to be part of the magic! - the release of some rehabilitated wildlife back into their natural environment. In the partnership between the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA, Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate and Cape Nature, a 9ha section of land on the Diemersfontein estate has been earmarked for rehabilitated wildlife rescued by the CoGH SPCA. Providing a safe haven of natural renosterveld or fynbos fields. Whilst the estate welcomes these wildlife, it will not restrict the animals in any sense, should they choose to move to areas more naturally preferable to them. Wildlife rescued by the CoGH SPCA are most often simply displaced from their natural home; or have been affected or injured by human-wildlife conflict situations, which include anything from cruel and inhumane traps, incidents of shooting or illegal hunting, the keeping of exotic or wild animals as pets etc. “The opportunity this wildlife preserve at Diemersfontein gives us is exactly why we remain steadfast in our jobs at the SPCA. To be able to release wildlife that come through our temporary care facility in Grassy Park, back into their natural habitat is exactly what inspires us to continue working to protect and care for our wild, natural heritage,” said Megan Reid, Wildlife Unit Supervisor of the CoGH SPCA. David Sonnenberg of Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate, and one of the pioneers of the Wildlife Preserve project commented at the release, “We are delighted to be associated with this very worthwhile conservation project. The presence of these little wild animals at Diemersfontein really enhances our lifestyle, and similarly we trust that these animals will also now enjoy a much happier and safer natural life.” To our new wildlife family on Diemersfontein - WELCOME HOME!
