HOW LONG CAN TEMPORARY FEELINGS REMAIN IN AN ACCESS - TopicsExpress

HOW LONG CAN TEMPORARY FEELINGS REMAIN IN AN ACCESS OPENING? Dear friends and colleagues, If Endodontic Treatment cannot be completed in one visit (strongly recommended), a temporary filling must be placed to prevent bacteria and fluids from the oral cavity from contaminating the pulp space. There are more than a dozen temporary filling materials (IRM, Cavit, TERM,etc.) and they all have one thing in common: THEY ALL LEAK! Because all temporary fillings allow microleakage, they must be replaced with a more permanent restorative material as soon as possible. In fact, if the temporary filling is allowed to remain in the access opening more than a brief period of time (1-2 weeks) it very well may lead to long-term endodontic failure by coronal leakage, even if the root canal has been properly obturated. Patients sometimes will delay returning to the dentist because all the symptoms from the tooth have abated. It must be impressed upon patients that they cannot delay a permanent restoration of the access opening or they will jeopardize the long-term success of the Endodontic Treatment. To impress upon patients the importance of a prompt final restoration, its best to have this in writing with the patients signing and dating his/her acknowledgment; this helps to minimize any future misunderstandings.
