HOW TO COMPARE AIR SUPERIORITY ROLE COMBAT AIRCRAFTS? Everyone talking about aircrafts need to compare them, but it is not that easy to evalute them. In this post i will introduce you with my method of evaluation. Firstly air superiority role aircraft means an aircraft which is strictly restricted to air-to-air roles(A2A). Now, in air superiority role, aircraft have to intercept and engage enemies in beyond visual range combat(BVR), have to fight within visual range(WVR) combats which is usually called dogfights. Generally, an aircrafts task can be divided in BVR and WVR combats. Now let us look at each case- 1) IN BVR COMBATS: ... first aircraft have to detect airborne threats. there are two efficient methods-1)RADAR (2)IRST(infra-red search and track) so, if you are given aircrafts to compare, first evalute which one have better radar, that is long range multifunction radar with more PEAK POWER. 2)After detecting the target, it needs to engage it in BVR to avoid future threats, therefore its payload, that is its missile package. generally active homing RADAR guided and PASSIVE homing IR guided missiles are used for long range attack, since they are FIRE AND FORGET MISSILES. in missiles compare there range, detonation fuse type and Gs it can load. 3)In long range missions, aircrafts fuel loading capacity is critical factor. therefore compare FUEL-LOADING CAPACITY. 4)Later, aircraft have to save itself from BVR missiles. therefore its defensive storage(chaffs and flares), and its ELECTRONIC COUNTER MEASURE SUIT OR JAMMERS should be compared. IN WVR COMBATS: 1)maneuvering is the key to win WVR combats. Maneuveringis determined by TURN PERFORMANCE. turn performance refers to TURN RADIUS and TURN RATE. Therefore you need to compare aircrafts turn radius and turn rate. 2) Its amunition loading, that is, its weapon load for WVR COMBATs. Compare there rounds and short-range missiles. 3) compare their TARGET ACQISTION MODE: in WVR combats, acqisition of target isnt a simple task. It refers to means by which a target can be acqired. GENERAL CHARECTERISTICS: Its speed, payload, wing size (although u dont need to compare wings properties because it is reflected in the turn performance)...
