HOWLERS VP OF WOMENS RUGBY MARIA SAMSON NAMED TO THE BOARD OF ATHLETES CAN ================================================== Taken from the AthletesCAN web page: Maria holds a Bachelor of Engineering with a Minor in Management from McGill University. She graduated with distinction, receiving the Governor General’s Medal, awarded to the graduating student who obtains the highest academic standing in a Bachelor degree program. Maria played rugby for two years at McGill, captaining the Martlets in 2007 and winning the team’s most valuable player award. After finishing University, Maria moved from Pine Hill, Quebec to Calgary, Alberta to join her eventual husband, Mozac, in the West. While juggling training and a full-time job, Maria joined the National Team in June 2011, earning her first Senior Women’s cap in August 2011 versus South Africa. Even though she was a late comer to the international scene, Maria was named as the top female rugby player in Canada in 2012 and went on to win the Canadian Rugby Foundation Colette McAuley Award in 2013 for giving back to the sport in the true spirit of the game. Maria has played for Canada close to 20 times, most recently winning a Silver Medal at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Paris, France in August 2014 – Canada’s best finish to date. She has been an active leader on the National team, being a member of the Rugby Canada Player’s Committee since 2012. Maria is also heavily involved in the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club – a philanthropic organization that operates under the saying “It’s more than a game, it’s a way of life”. Maria is committed to using her sporting experience to inspire youth to persevere through less than ideal situations. She is an Athlete Ambassador with Right to Play and Fast and Female, and is a frequent guest coach at many Calgary clubs and institutions. AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s national team athletes, is the only fully independent and most inclusive athlete organization in the country and the first organization of its kind in the world. As the collective voice of Canadian national team athletes, AthletesCAN ensures an athlete centered sport system by developing athlete leaders who influence sport policy and, as role models, inspire a strong sport culture. AthletesCAN is a multi-sport service organization representing all national team athletes including Aboriginal, Paralympic, Pan American Games, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games athletes, among others. Athletes who are members of Canada’s national teams, or athletes who have retired from a senior national team within the past eight years are considered members of AthletesCAN.
