HVC LAST CHANCE CLUB ........... TOBY REYES I was having a peaceful early Monday afternoon under 4 dogs in my recliner when I got a phone call from a LCC members owner - she was out at the clinic door with a hit-by-car dog. OH BOY .... I helped Esmeralda with Chuchos orthopedic surgery a year ago (see August 17th posting) and another dog in the extended family had been HBC on October 5th and was seen at the emergency clinic. Now Toby needed surgery on 2, possibly 3 legs. OHHHHHHH BOYYYYYYYY !! Thankfully x-rays showed the right front leg was ok , the left hind leg was ok but the pelvis was fractured at two sites and left hind was ........... a mess. The lower bones - tibia was in 4 pieces and fibula in 2. And the vet budget had zeroed out after the E-clinic and radiographs. And did I mention Toby was in pain but also doing a great dog from hell imitation? Fifteen pound boy with 5 inch teeth .... well it seemed that way. The thing that hooked me about this case was Tobys owner, Gabriel. Very nice young man who had seen Toby in his previous living conditions where he was being abused. Instead just looking away and leaving Toby to a bad fate, Gabriel rescued him and loves him dearly. So we scheduled surgery for today - fangs and all. First thing at exam, Toby did a toothy lunge but ole Docs still got the moves to only get a glancing blow. Great.... off to a good start. But actually we were doing well - Toby handled the anesthesia and the four pieces of the tibia, which could not be plated, KEd, or IM pinned, stabilized with 2 cerclage wires. A soft cast will help for a couple of weeks. A neuter and vaccines completed his procedures. Now for the post-op care - and needing all 10 digits - Toby had a change of heart and I could now pet him and give him water. The hard pain he had from moving bone fragments had stopped.
