Haines, Little Switzerland by the Sea. Little town make big Alaska Waves! Ketchikan Daily News covers the Haines Glacier Bears at Regionals. Haines streaks to state. By RICHARD LARSON Daily News Staff Writer After losing their first eight Southeast Conference games of the year, the Haines Glacier Bears didnt appear to be much of a threat to emerge as a contender at the regional tournament. But the Bears, who swept Craig and Wrangell to finish the year at 4-8 in conference play, continued their late-season surge at the Southeast tournament in Juneau, beating Craig 56-40 in the second-place game on Saturday to earn a bid to the state tournament. Haines lost 49-32 to eventual champion Metlakatla in the opening round on Wednesday, but came back to eliminate Wrangell on Thursday before upending Craig on Saturday. Craig was playing without senior point guard Kelsey Trojan, who had to fly to Spokane, Wash., to do a presentation for a merit-based scholarship at Gonzaga. To lose a guy who has played every game for us this season, who ran our offense and led our defense, it was big, Craig coach Aaron Isaacs said. We had to have other players step up for us today, but things just didnt go our way. The Panthers failed to get back on defense throughout the contest, with Haines players leaking behind the defense for long break-out passes and easy baskets. The Glacier Bears led 21-18 at the half, and then pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Craig 17-9 in the frame. I think their want-to was just bigger than ours today, Isaacs said. They played a heck of a game. They had a good game plan and are well-coached. Kai Sato-Franks led a balanced Haines attack with 15 points. Devin Light added 14, Justin Swinton finished with 11, and Isaac Wing had 10. Franks, Light, Swinton and Wing are all seniors. Haines played seven seniors in the contest.
