What does hand-made mean anyway?–in this case: There is no pdf or cad file of this letter, which in turn then ran a machine to cut out the shape. this L was rough cut with aviation snips, ground down with bench grinder (yeah, its electric) two holes drilled with electric hand drill, finish ground with carbide bit on electric dremel, and finished with hand files, emerygrit, and scotch brite pads, then polished on an electric buffing wheel. The curve hammered into 1 3/8 tubing block to fit around a 1 1/8 headtube, then finish polished with hands and a cloth. Im just clarifying the fact that hand-made gets thrown around like the news and is high fashion at the moment. But it really comes down to how much involvement the hand-maker really has on the finished product, and/or how little involvement they are willing to admit. Making things with your own hands is not glorious, but it is noble. Weather its a simple letter carved from metal, or an airplane; a garden or a house; a song or a movie. Only a human can put the human element into things,–imperfection, spontaneity, and most importantly Beauty. When the human element no longer seems Beautiful, there is a problem greater than we could ever imagine,–and guess what? we are very close to that problem. It is not an understatement to say that I lived more in the 4 hours it took me to make this headbadge, than some people live in a month: the definition of Quality; Quality Time; and living to full potential, versus living to gain something other than your Self.
