Happy Thanksgiving! This morning the R.H. Macy and Company Store National Historic Landmark on 34th Street will serve as a backdrop to performances and events during the 88th annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York! When this huge structure on Herald Square was completed in 1902, it boasted 42 miles of wiring, 33 hydraulic elevators, and 1,000 tons of ornamental iron and bronze. After a major addition in the 1920s, Macys proclaimed that it was the worlds largest department store under one roof. Many of Macys department store employees in the 1920s were immigrants. To help celebrate their new American heritage, Macy’s employees organized a European type festival with a procession featuring floats, bands, and animals from the zoo. The parade was such a success that it became an annual event! #Thanksgiving #MacysParade
