Happy birthday Beethoven, the composer I was raised on and undoubtedly the most influential composer ever. From a young age, he exhibited considerable talent, independence, and wilful nonconformity. He composed symphonies, sonatas, string quartets, concertos, and one opera, shattering musical boundaries and setting the stage for how musicians and listeners would think about music right up to the modern day. Beethovens great innovation, for my ear, was the way he juxtaposed different keys and unexpected notes to join them. In doing so, he expanded the harmonic realm and created a real sense of unfolding drama in the piece. Thats what I hear every time I shut my eyes and listen to him.
