Happy what-would-be 109th birthday to Mikio Naruse, one of my favorite Japanese filmmakers. im only familiar with his silent films from the early 30s, but he kept making movies for a long time after that. Unfortunately so many of his films are lost, so unless someone stumbles across a print in an old drawer one day, theyll never be seen. Nevertheless, Naruse was possibly Japans great director from the time period just before the big three of Japanese cinema rose to prominence (Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi). Here is a little montage of some sequences from Naruse films. This video is absolutely gorgeous, and really shows how amazing Naruses camerawork was. Its worth five minutes for anyone who wants to see how beautiful classic black-and-white cinematography can really be. Happy birthday, Mikio Naruse.
