Has anyone bothered to ponder why almost 600,000 Nigeria graduates simultaneously converged at various points across the nation in the most desperate manner as job seekers of the Nigeria Immigration Service 4,500 recruitment slots? 600,000 applicants for job meant for only 4,500 people!!! The applicants were defrauded 1,000Naira each as application fee leaving the criminal elements in the NIS to smile home with 600,000,000Naira equivalent of US$4Million!!! The uncontrollable crowed at the National Stadium Abuja, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos and other approved centres were like a world cup final match. What really attracted these job seekers to troop out en mass to the slaughter spots where they were exploited, defrauded, brutalized, humiliated and killed??? Could it be the poor and dehumanized stipendiary package because my friend at NIS told me that the monthly emolument of a NIS officer cannot even sustain a bachelor let alone a man with family??? Definitely the point of attraction is no doubt the corrupt practices at the NIS, the bribes and the kick-backs. For example, it costs less than 10,000naira to obtain a new international passport but you must spend twice that amount or even more to have one. The addition goes directly into the pocket of the NIS officer. By the way it’s business as usual at other government agencies and not the NIS alone. If you abhor corruption and sharp practices, I bet you won’t dare seek for job in any government establishment because the working condition will no doubt compel you to create an avenue to augment your income. Over 20deaths recorded as a result of stampede at different location of the NIS recruitment exercise with the highest number of deaths at National Stadium Abuja and the youths went home silently without staging a national protest!!! The loss of more than 20 lives in a shoddy arrangement by the NIS and the ministry of interior should have been a symbol of revolution. The wealthy few and those with strong connections have already bought the 4,500 job slots yet the NIS went further to scam more than half a million desperate job seekers. What a national calamity and disgrace!!!
