Have I told you lately how much I hate society or corporate society as a whole? As the mother of a medically & mentally challenged child, I never truly understand how society can pass the buck as often as they do....almost as if what my child has is contagious and theyre afraid to get their fingers dirty in case her illness infects them. Been fighting her insurance company to be able to speak for her since she is aphasic. Conversation goes as follows.... Insurance Company rep: Im sorry Mrs Bova but youre not listed as an appointed representative for your daughter and I cannot access her medical records for you Me: I know the HIPAA laws. I am not asking for access to her records, besides...As her mother I am sure that I know more of what is in her records than this company or her doctors. All I need to know is if her primary care is in your directory. Insurance Company Rep: AS I already told you, I cannot access her records for you BUT.... if you let me ask Kimberlee if you can speak on her behalf, and permission is granted, I will speak to you this one time. Me: You can ask her anything you want but please understand she is non-verbal and unable to do anything but grunt. Insurance Company Rep: Kimberlee, Do you give consent for me to speak with your mother regarding your medical records? Kimberlee: Makes audible grunt to affirm that she can speak to me. Insurance Company Rep: Im sorry, I cannot access her records for you since I am unable to understand your daughter. Me: (IN MY MIND) Of course not asshole I just told you she cannot speak!. Insurance Company Rep: Please contact Social Security so they can update the medicaid file so you can speak to us. Fax us the necessary paperwork. Go to Social Security: Nope that is not our responsibility, you need to go to DCF Go to DCF: Nope not our responsibility, you need to go to the state medicaid office Go to State medicaid office: Nope not our responsibility, you need to go to Social security. SHAKING MY HEAD.....then clarity set in.... I did the only thing I could think of.... I went to the insurance company office and walked out being able to gain access to my daughters medical records. Just as a double security.... I have file to get co- guardianship of her through the court system.
