Have you heard by our latest recruitment drive........ Heritage Skills Training Academy. The Severn Valley Railway is about to launch its own Heritage Skills Training Academy. The railway wishes to train young people in basic engineering and in the traditional methods of repair, overhaul and maintenance of our historic fleet of locomotives and carriages. The railway will recruit five trainees this summer who will undertake an engineering course at a local college leading to a recognised qualification. The Course will be full-time for three days per week over the next two years. The trainees will then spend two days a week at the Railway working with the paid staff and volunteers to gain practical experience of the railway operation. In return, a bursary of £4000 per annum will be provided for this initial two year period. Upon satisfactory completion of the traineeship, a two- or three-year apprenticeship will be offered with 50% of the time spent on the Railway working in our workshops alongside our skilled staff and the remaining time spent at college to attain higher levels of formal qualification; the apprenticeship it is anticipated will also be accredited by a national body such as the Heritage Railway Association. A graduated apprenticeship salary will be paid during this period. On successful completion of this apprenticeship, there will be opportunities to work either at the SVR, other heritage railways and other heritage industries. GCSE ‘C’ grade in Maths and English are required. Interviews will be two-stage and take place in July. Please submit your interest through submitting a C.V. and covering letter.
