Having seen so much whimsy and so little story in the trailers, I expected the Boxtrolls to be a quirky, beautifully crafted, but timid romp. I am glad to be proven wrong! Like any good fairy tale, the plot is simple and familiar, but not tiresome, and deftly juggles grotesquery and warmth. The characters are loveable, even though the world they live in is absurd. And Archibald Snatcher is one of my favorite comic villains in a long, long time. He’ll stop at nothing, including…well, I’ll let you see for yourself.
