Headington v Barton Rovers, Thames Valley Counties Women’s League Division 1, Sunday 1st September 2013, Kick Off 2pm. Team: Lou, Kendall, Nicöla, Hazel, Jess, Kate, CD, Lara, Amber, Melinda, Newport, Bronagh, Clara and Lily. Score 3-0 (Clara, Melinda 2) Here we go, it’s the start of another season! Today Hazel, Melinda, Kate and Kendall made their league debuts for us. The sun was shining and the pitch was dry albeit a little over-grown and dusty! We started in a new formation and for the first twenty minutes really struggled to adapt, Barton had the majority of the possession and shooting downhill had the advantage of the pitch. Despite having the possession they couldn’t find a way past our back line and could only test Lou with a couple of speculative long range efforts which Lou comfortably dealt with. We were a bit of a shambles for the first twenty minutes allowing the ball to bounce over our heads, mis-judging the bounce, playing too many long/high balls, having two players go for the same ball and not communicating with each other. We slowly began to get ourselves together as we became accustomed to our new formation and working with our debutants. We had several efforts on goal which were well dealt with by their keeper. Half-way through the half we were awarded a penalty when a cracking through ball from Lara found Melinda who was sent flying in their penalty area, the referee didn’t know what to do but luckily the linesman was on hand to award the spot-kick. Up stepped CD but sadly the spot-kick was right down the middle which their keeper saved. We didn’t allow this missed penalty to get to us, we were by now getting into the game, Clara came on for Amber with Newps moved to the left wing. We were battling hard for everything and were creating a number of chances but just didn’t get a clean shot on goal, both Newps and Clara were unlucky with efforts that didn’t quite make it. After 30 minutes we took the lead, this was a well worked team goal, the ball was played across the back line before being played forward through midfield and into the path of Clara who slotted the ball past the stranded keeper, from beginning to end this move involved seven separate players! Great goal and although we weren’t playing well we had created the better chances. The closest Barton got to scoring was a shot which dribbled past Lou’s near-side post. The second half saw us with the downhill advantage and we took full advantage. We were now the dominant team in this game and had now clicked. We created chance after chance after chance but just couldn’t find that finish. After the hour mark we finally got the break-through that we deserved with a nice finish from Melinda running through the middle to score her debut goal! This goal dis-heartened our opponents, they were clinging on until now but there was always the chance for an equalizer, Melinda’s goal put the game to bed and we could then relax and enjoy ourselves. Amber was flying down the left wing and on one occasion was brought down in the penalty area but we didn’t get anything on this occasion. We continued to press forward and created several chances but again just couldn’t find that final touch. After 80 minutes we grabbed our third goal with another cool finish from Melinda….not a bad strike rate including the pre-season friendly…2 games 5 goals!! The game ended with a 3-0 victory for us, a great result and perfect start to the season!! Player of the match……….Newps!!!!!
