Heart of a goddess …a poem by Ogbonna Lazarus. Men of all colours and kinds And those of all tribes and clans Have gathered…to war, For the heart of a goddess, The goddess of eternal love. The good and ugly and yet... The wanted and unwanted Of all seething hands and hearts, Of men stirred to lay siege, Upon the goddess and her Island. Nine million men fought, And Aphrodite kept watch, And men warred and died For the gift of the goddess, Gift of eternal life and youth. And I too…not in the least, But armed to the teeth Took my sword and set sail, Warring for the life of my soul The heart of the goddess. Nothing was left behind, Men warred for love unending, Many lost…and lost their minds Sinking deep to Davy Jones locker, And be left thereafter with no heart. But the last-man standing Had life everlasting, As the goddess had his heart Taken and kept in her chest, Where it neither grows old nor dies.
