Heavy school bags taking a toll on children and teens! With the start of the school year upon us, the problem of school bag weight is back in the news. It is recommended that school pupils carry no more than 10% of their body weight. (If a pupil is between 40-60kgs, they should not carry more than 4-6kgs) A recent study found that 68% of school bags were still over the 10% recommendation, with 60% of pupils reporting some level of discomfort caused by their bags! Heavy school bags can lead to back pain and posture problems, however here are some simple remedies: 1)Making sure your child has a good bag that will distribute the weight evenly. 2)Make sure the bag is being carried correctly (on 2 shoulders and with the shoulder straps pulled tight. 3)Encourage your child to be more organised and only bring books to and from school that are immediately needed. 4)Supervised study after school means books can be left in a locker overnight. If your child is having ongoing problems you can contact The Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic for further advice.
