Hehe. Radiolab topic summary: communication between mind & body. A doctor helped a patient wear down and eventually eliminate severe phantom limb pain through clever application of a mirror and non-missing hand to trick the mind into thinking the phantom hand was fine and not clenched to the point of pain. The patient continued the visual-trick therapy on his own, thus elominating all but the smallest amount of phantom limb sensation, and called the doc to thank him for getting rid of it so completely. Later, the doctor related the success anecdotally to his colleagues as, having been the first case of successfully AMPUTATING a PHANTOM limb. =p
