Hello All! One week before we hit the road in Canada and the Pacific Northwest! This probably isnt the last note I or Susan will be sending out, but I will be starting north on Tuesday or Wednesday, so my chances of helping you in person are becoming limited! If you want your hiking boots (this especially applies to the Burgess Shale hikers) or any other materials to be transported in our car, you will need to get them to me on Monday. I will be in my office on Monday for part of the day, but I suggest that if I am not around, put your boots in a labeled bag and ask the SME staff people Wendy or Rose (the Division office on the bottom floor of the Science Community Center) to put them in the room with my mail box. I will pick them up at the end of the day. Many of you have submitted your documentation of medical coverage, the liability waiver for MJC, and copies of your passport. If you have not yet done these things, please do so when you can. If you cant come by in person, you can scan them and send by email. Susan Kerr wont be leaving for Seattle until later in the week, so you can drop them off with her as well. The participants of our expedition have a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. Some of you are geology majors in universities and others are geology fans and hobbyists. As such, we hope the trip will satisfy your curiosity about the region in the most interesting way possible. If you dont have much background in geology, I encourage you to read the attached document and work out the answers to the questions at the end. This document is the first part of your trip handbook, and your first written assignment. Your enjoyment of the trip will be much enhanced by mastering or attempting to master this basic background material. If it seems confusing, seeing it in the rocks while in the field will go a long ways towards making things clearer! Finally a reminder: this is the first time weve done a trip like this, and we have made every effort to make sure it runs smoothly, but remember that things can always get complicated. We might very well have bad weather, we might run late some days, we might miss a stop and backtrack a bit. Your flexibility and patience will be greatly appreciated. Please contact me or Susan Kerr if you have any questions. See you in Seattle if not sooner!!! Time to hit the road (or fly the skies)! Garry Hayes
