Hello everyone! Theres an upcoming event through the Anthro Department that I thought Id share with the group in case anyone wants to go: Mizrahi Mothers, Wrapped in the Flag: Ultra-Nationalism and the Divinity of Citizenship in Israel-Palestine Nov. 19, 4-5:30pm, 2nd floor of the Center for Judaic Studies Prof. Smadar Lavies new ethnography describes her life as a welfare mother in Israel-Palestine, and her leadership role in Ahoti, Israels first Feminist of Color movement. She exposes the structural apartheid between Jews from the Muslim and Arab World (Mizrahim), Israels majority citizenry, and the states European Jewish ruling minority. Through the lens of the 2003 Single Mothers March and the Tel Aviv-Hahrir mass demonstrations of 2011, Lavie explores the conundrum of an Israeli bureaucratic system that repeatedly inflicts pain on its non-European majority who are nonetheless willing to sacrifice their lives for what they conceive as the states security. Her talk revolves around the question of what is the relationship between these social protest movements in the state of Israel, violence in Gaza, protest movements in the surrounding Islamic world, and the possibility of a third intifada or a nuclear conflict between Israel and Iran?
