Hello from a warm winter Camp!! We are half way through our winter camp; fresh mornings and evenings with a lovely 23 degrees in the day! We have a group of 40 enthusiastic campers (teenagers) and 12 staff members. The campers have settled in and the increase in volume of shrieks and laughter while doing the activities and running around camp testifies to that! Already the camp days are slipping by and it seemed only a few hours ago that we watched the sunset on our first day. Our welcome camp fire was lit by a beautiful full moon rising and a sky full of stars. The fire warmed our bodies while the singing and dancing warmed our souls. As I write this note, one group is canoeing in the dam (and the other three groups will take their turn during the day). The other three groups are challenging themselves on the ropes course, the tunnel and discussions on life skills respectively. Tomorrow, as the confidence increases, a harder task awaits – scaling up the rock face! Yes, it will be rock climbing and abseiling for all! Every camp we do has its own highlights. This one has a very special highlight. Four years ago Hlanganani Luthuli attended the camp as a camper. In his own words, the camp was a turning point that enabled him to complete his matric and subsequently obtained a scholarship at the University of Cape Town. He wanted to make a difference in the lives of other youth. He remained committed to the project and attended several staff training sessions and during the holidays assisted as a counsellor on a number of camps. In this camp he was challenged to take the role of Camp Manager, to co-ordinate all the other counsellors and their groups and keep things running smoothly. Judging by the constant big grin on his face and the abundance of energy and enthusiasm, he is thoroughly enjoying his new role and doing very well so far. Well done Hlanganani, we are very proud of you! Once again, a very big thank you to all of you whom constantly support Camp Bambanani through word, thought or deed. Our latest donation from Sally Collier enabled us to maximise this camp and contribute to our next one. To Steve Goodwin – embarking on a 1000 mile bike ride to raise funds for Camp Bambanani. For those of you who would like to support Steve in his endeavour, please visit charitygiving.co.uk/stevegoodwin Steve, we wish you good luck!! To others, the Murata’s in Japan, Carolyn Howie in South Africa and Jo Murtagh in the UK who have constantly supported numerous children to be able to attend Camp Bambanani, another big thank you! Siyabonga kakhulu (thank you very much)
