Hello to all the esteemed members of the great SIERRA LEONE ISSUES group. I have some exclusive photos taken by me today. Until they are re-shared from my posts, I can assure that you will only find these photos here in this group or on my wall and simply nowhere else. They are truly EXCLUSIVES. :-) These two photos show the first ever meeting held between President Ernest Bai Koroma and Kelvin Lewis led association of journalists (SLAJ). President Koroma has assured SLAJ that he will continue to give journalists all the space they need to do their work within the law but he also said as President, he had an obligation to see that the privacy and reputations of his citizens were upheld by journalists. President Koroma also pointed out to SLAJ executive members that the security of the State can not be allowed to be compromised. President Koroma said “I have been a friend of the media for a very long time and I intend to continue to be a friend of the media” but he said, the reputations and privacy of all Sierra Leoneans including public officials must be respected. President Koroma further reiterated his promise to review the 1965 criminal libel laws but against a background of ensuring everybody is protected. The journalist must be protected. Security personnel must be protected. The public must be protected. State Security must be protected. The reputations and privacy of all Sierra Leoneans including members of my government must be protected, the countrys Fountain of Honour pointed out. Later, President Koroma also urged journalists to utilise investigative skills and get to the bottom of allegations especially those that have to do with people abusing their offices or using the name of the President to gain undue favours. Pursue it” the President urged adding “Any action that is not in keeping with the Law, should be challenged. That is the role of civil society and the press... Objective criticisms enhance my capacity as I will react to such and improve. Generally, I listen to all kinds of sounds. As President, I act on the positive sounds but for the negative noises, I just dismiss them. Meanwhile, this first photo shows Lewis appealing for clemency for his colleagues facing seditious libel charges whilst the second one shows the two men sharing a joke together. I took both of these photos during the meeting inside the Presidents office at State House today.
