Help! I need suggestions, thoughts and ideas. I have a relatively new 4H Club, this will only be our 2nd year. Last year, two of our kids chose to show pigs and had so much fun doing it! We were new, didnt have a lot of money and were focused more on getting our footing and learning the ropes than winning any major prizes. We picked up a couple of cheap yourkshire/blueboar crosses. My daughters was the smallest at the fair and just barely made weight, both we out of the arena as quickly as they entered, but the kids had a ball and learned a ton! One thing these kids learned though was what they wanted their pig to look like next time. So now, Im looking for pigs that are short, stalky, with fat, round little legs and round butts. Cody Goswick has a darling gilt that both kids are coveting, and while I havent entirely given up on buying her, Im having a heck of a time trying to get her from MO to UT at a price that we can afford. We want to get pigs with better breeding than we got last year, but the kids only have $125 a piece. I realize that that may not be a reasonable amount to spend on a good quality show pig, but Im still not looking for top notch, just better than last year (which truly is not asking much! LOL) So, my questions are these… One, what breeds of pigs are short, stalky and fat? Secondly, does anyone know where I can get decent quality show pigs within a 6 hour drive of Salt Lake City, UT at around $125 a piece? (The rest of the kids had so much fun working with these two and their pigs, that four of them have declared their animal projects as pigs this year, so Im gonna need 4 piglets!) And as a last, desperate attempt, does anyone know a way to get a piglet from MO to UT for less than $50?? LOL Thanks in advance!
