Here is a prime example of why the stupid testing needs to be declared illegal: I have student whose back story would make you cry in horror at all he survived. He arrived here as an unaccompanied minor, was place in foster care three time zones away from his brother, faced all of the legal battles with great maturity, and stayed in school. In four years, he learned English, passed all of his classes to earn all of his required credits, completed service hours, wrote a 5 page senior paper, completed portfolios of evidence of learning in lieu of the mandated tests for math, reading, and writing each of which was sent to the state for scoring. He learned today that he will not receive his diploma and will lose all of his scholarships because while he passed his math and writing portfolios, he is 7, yes SEVEN, points shy of the passing score for reading.
