Here is a request for signing, implanted children to participate in an important research study: Sign Language Exposure and Cochlear Implant Use My name is Diane Allshouse, I am a research assistant in the Cognitive Neurolingustic Research Lab at UC Davis, under the direction of Dr. David P. Corina. Our research focuses on how Deaf and hearing people learn and process language, specifically American Sign Language (ASL). Dr. Corina is a world-renowned researcher on signed languages and is a strong advocate for the Deaf community. Here is a link to our website if you would like to find out more information: [see link below] We are recruiting participants and hope that you can help. Our current research is in conjunction Gallaudet’s Visual Language Visual Learning (VL2) program and is funded by NSF. This research is significant for Deaf educators and Deaf policy makers and all of us in the Deaf community. We currently are recruiting children for this study and, although we are located in California, we are more than willing to travel if a large enough population of potential participants can be located. Study: Sign Language Exposure and Cochlear Implant Use: An ERP Experiment Data from electrical activity in the brain is collected while the child watches an engaging video or listens to sounds. By analyzing patterns from children’s brain activity, we can measure the effects of sign language on auditory cortex function. There is currently much debate surrounding CI use, especially whether sign language should be used once a child receives a CI. The purpose of this study is to address some of these concerns. • For this study, we are seeking participants who are: o Children ages 12 months-8 years old o Who use a cochlear implant, but continue to be exposed to a signing environment (particularly ASL), either in the home or at school. Financial compensation is available and children receive a certificate and toy! Please note that we are located in Davis California, but if there are enough willing participants in a location outside of Davis or California, we are more than willing to travel to you. So please contact us even if you are located elsewhere. Thank you so much.
