Heres my question of the day: How/why have people become so - TopicsExpress

Heres my question of the day: How/why have people become so comfortable being ruled by strangers they have never even met and who have no concern for our welfare? Examples: I love freedom, but compulsory government schooling is OK because its better for children. I love freedom, but Im going to keep buying things from China even though they are a totalitarian regime that destroys our economy by selling cheap products made by slave labor. I love freedom, but its OK for the government to spy on us because it prevents terrorism. I love freedom, but I cant buy beer until Im 21 because the government said so, and that makes sense because it saves lives. I love freedom, but registering the guns of law abiding citizens will reduce crime. I love freedom, but paying taxes isnt theft, its a social contract. The list could go on, but I think you get the point. And on taxation, did you know that the concept of taxation is rooted in plunder? Its true. Kings would attack neighboring city states and take their property. Later, they figured out they could just demand tribute from them and the people would pay it because they were afraid. Over time, the idea emerged, What if.... instead of having to go fight them and take their stuff by force every time we run low, what if we just made them pay a little every year? And taxation was born. Does that sound like a social contract? It sounds like extortion and thievery under threat of death to me. ~TLR
