Heres the original version of My Boy Lollipop from 1956. Alleged mobster Gaetano Vastola discovered 14-year-old Barbie Gaye singing on a street corner in Coney Island, and bought the rights to the song from record company exec Morris Levy, who had bought them from the writer, Robert Spencer of The Cadillacs. Levy and another alleged gangster, Johnny Roberts, claimed to have written the song to avoid paying Spencer any royalties, saying that Robert Spencer was a pseudonym. Eventually all three were credited with authorship. Vastola became Gayes manager, and she recorded the song with a session band led by guitarist Leroy Kirkland. The band arranged the song in shuffle style, popular in black communities in the U.S. and in Jamaican dance halls. But it would be eight more years before the song became a breakout hit, performed by an actual Jamaican. https://youtube/watch?v=I1OYZ1PZtV0
