Heres the reaction I just posted regarding Sierra Clubs new website: - - - - - - - - Clean, yes. Looks contemporary, too. But in my opinion, its far too sterile, too mechanical, not nearly as organic as it should feel. I think the visual messaging is off. The saturated blues and oranges are energetic, but to me, they just dont fit with your branding and messaging -- at least in the way they are applied. The logo and header bar on a gray gradient? What does gray say to your visitors? Does it represent the organization, or the way the sky will look if we dont all take action? The overall feel of the home page will benefit when you have a little flora in the slider/non-slider image, but still, the photo alone wont be enough to bring life into this look and feel. With the backgrounds as they are, you have gray on gray on gray. And just because a site uses WordPress -- or in this case, Drupal -- as its engine, the site doesnt have to look the way people expect those sites to look. Looking businesslike and competent is important for attracting many large donors. But I think that having a site that provides a welcoming, aspirational feel that relates to the environment and outdoor life are vital to attracting and retaining the countless enthusiasts and small donors who likely make up a large portion of your membership. I have other specific thoughts, but I think you get the idea. Id be more than happy to discuss. In my opinion, this design would be appropriate for another organization, but isnt right for Sierra Club. But it wouldnt take too much to improve it. :)
