Heres the thing: I referenced Foghorn Leghorn on another comment line. I posted this clip montage. Someone who had never seen or heard of the Big Beaked Blowhard made the comment that he sounded like the stereotypical, Southern, good ole boy racist cop. I responded, Oh my. Even Looney Tunes have no place in this society. Were doomed. An odd retort to my comment was made and the person left the conversation. But it brings about larger questions. Who are these people who havent seen Looney Tunes? And will the PC environment swallow our beloved characters whole? They have been... forgive the term.... whitewashed over the last 30 odd years. It is true that early Merrie Melodies & Looney Tunes have some racist characterizations. Those were weeded out quickly in favor of satirizing human foibles and traits though. Stereotypes DO abound, but they are all foils for the main cast. I find Foghorn hilarious and never once had I seen his southern self-aggrandizing braggadocio as rude to any race, creed or color. Dogs, yes. I see parts of myself in all the Looney Tunes from Foghorns big mouth to Daffys keenly lunatic mind. Become familiar with how these characters were created and youll glean much as to why these characters should be held close and loved. They are us. They are more than us, they can survive an anvil dropping on their heads.
