Heres the thing: participatory, community-based theatre is all the rage right now. This artist, Sharon Bridgforth, has been doing it for twenty years - she is an architect, a conductor, a visionary practitioner. I know very few people who meet and work with Sharon who arent positively transformed by the experience. (Those who arent are usually revealed to be mean little curmudgeons who dont like the sun, anyhow.) Ive been blessed to know her since the Spring of 1994 when she picked me up (newly arrived to Austin for a directing job) to go to coffee at Little City, on the recommendation of our mutual friend Shay, I knew in my heart and soul that Id found my kin. She is a bluesperson in the old-school sense, wanderlust in her bones, and a deep, trans-temporal connection to the power artists have to radically alter the material circumstance of our shared reality through play.
