Heres your womens soccer recap from tonight: It was late-game heroics that nearly helped the Phoenix College Bears Womens Soccer team pull off a stunning upset against defending national champion Paradise Valley Thursday night, but ultimately, it was more late-game heroics on the Pumas side that downed the Bears, 2-1, in overtime at Hogan Field at Hoy Stadium on the PC campus. The loss foiled a chance for the Bears to move past Pima (who also lost in overtime Thursday to Mesa) into 5th place, and now sets up a must-win situation for Phoenix Saturday afternoon in their regular season finale to ensure a berth in the six-team Region I Playoffs, which begin Tuesday. While only managing a total of six shots on goal all night long, the Bears stayed right with the 2nd-ranked Pumas (18-1 overall, 16-1 ACCAC) through the first 85 minutes of play Thursday. With 4:46 left in regulation, PVs Ashley Johnson broke free and trickled a rolling cross shot past PC goalkeeper Cecilia Duarte into the right side of the net to give the Pumas a 1-0 left. The dejected looks on the faces of the fans on the home side of the field suddenly turned overjoyed when PCs leading scorer Jasmine Arollo charged in with :40 left to go and cashed in Gaby Fuentes set-up pass to tie the score in the final minute and send the match to OT. The Pumas kept the pressure on Duarte and the Bears backline in the extra session, firing 4 of their 15 shots on goal in the extra session. Just before the match was set to head to a second overtime, the conferences leading scorer, PVs Nicole Nsa broke away and scored the game-winner with just :06 left in the overtime period to give the Pumas the victory. Duarte had 6 saves for the Bears, while PV goalkeeper Rachel Cardwell saved half of PCs 6 shots on goal. The Bears (8-9-2 overall, 7-8-2 ACCAC) now head into their regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Hogan Field needing to defeat the Glendale Gauchos to have a chance at the postseason. Kickoff is at 4:30PM to begin the final ACCAC Mens-Womens Soccer doubleheader of the season.
