Hey 1a ladies, as I mentioned in class tonight, have a look at my saidi playlist for next week: https://youtube/playlist?list=PLD3190B16450AE447 RE: a couple of specific points I made... Saidi people (male AND female) DO do torso-based movements, in addition to the saidi specific steps we worked on in class tonight. Here are a couple of examples: https://youtube/watch?v=cunFx64BK2Q https://youtube/watch?v=6p1rpxpNUdU The ghawazee (professional female dancers) in the Said mostly dance with their torso. Once in a while they throw in the standard saidi steps, but they then return to their own style of dance. Ghawazee dancers were the original professional belly dancers of Egypt, before raqs sharqi (theatrical belly dance) emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. Here is a playlist of the Banat Mazin ghawazee: https://youtube/playlist?list=PLBFAD3C8A410B55CC Remember that the women who perform saidi dance in the professional theatrical folklore troupes in Egypt wear costumes that have been heavily stylized for the stage...these are not garments that actual saidi women would wear on the street (and many saidi women are very conservative and wouldnt be caught dead dancing in public in a professional dance costume). By contrast, the garments worn by the male dancers are pretty much the actual garments that you can find ordinary men wearing in the Said.
