Hey Vets, this is PA Week! A physician assistant (PA) is a highly skilled medical professional who works as part of a physician led team providing comprehensive health care. PAs practice in many different settings: family and general medicine, general internal medicine and its subspecialties, general surgery and surgical subspecialties, pediatrics and its subspecialties, emergency medicine, occupational medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology, as well as other areas of medicine A PA is a graduate of an accredited PA educational program who is highly skilled, nationally certified and state-licensed to practice medicine. The entry level education is a Master’s Degree from an accredited PA Program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 30% growth for PAs from 2010 to 2020. According to The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants there are more than 90,000 certified PA. The WJB Dorn VAMC currently employs 14 PA’s in the following services: Cardiology, GI, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, Pain Management, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit.
