Hey friends...I wanted to share Sam Hollanders heartwarming post with you. Here it is: 3 years ago, my publisher booked me to write with Matt Serletic, Aimée Proal, and Dave Katz for a new Joe Cocker CD. I was super excited. Easily one of my favorite vocalists- I cant even count how many of my mixtapes Delta Lady kicked off along the way. I eagerly hopped in the car and headed to Matts studio somewhere deep in the Valley. I was about halfway there when I got a text from Brian Lee generously asking me if I wanted to write with himself, Owl City, and Matthew Thiessen that very same afternoon. Damn, it was such an enticing offer. I had a sneaky feeling it would be a real good fit. I pulled off the freeway and wrestled with it. Since I had already committed to the Valley crew and I still believed in practicing some semblance of protocol in these matters- I politely passed. I ended up having a really solid day with the Cocker bunch. We wrote a sweet, melancholic song titled The Last Road. And Joe actually liked it. I was beyond stoked. The next day- as the fates would have it- I finally got to write with the Owl City squad. When I walked into the studio, almost immediately, they played me the song that they had written the night before. It was called Good Time... Wah. Wah. Wah. Im sure you know where this ones headed. In a few months Carly Rae Jepsen jumped on it and it became a worldwide Top 10 smash. My Joe Cocker song you might ask? It was only released in Germany. Yes. As a bonus cut. From that day forward, whenever I heard Good Time, Id drift into a momentary tailspin wondering what mightve been if I had just chosen door #2 (thanks Shelly Peiken . That is, until this morning. When I got the awful word of Joes passing, I strapped on my headphones and listened to our old bonus track again for the first time in ages. It slayed me. God--I realized this is one of the cooler things Ive ever been a part of in music. This mind-blowing voice delivering my words. All that nasty guttural vocal fire -blazing each syllable. Im so fn blessed to play this small nugget for my kid someday. From now on Ill celebrate every second of it even if my disgruntled wallet disagrees. RIP to one of the greats, or as Google Translator tells me they say in Germany-- Ruhe in Friedan! youtu.be/xgJK-NsE7F4
