Hey there sports fans! Through the years Ive always been intrigued with reading about the SS. Most interesting is to discover that some of my sand box tank battles, nay, tank massacres, sorta happened scores of times with Pzkw VIs, the nefarious or famous Tiger. The Tiger by itself isn’t exactly destructive, it’s the people who crewed it, OK fine. Here’s part of a sentence that is fairly common: “…the Tiger in the hands of the SS…” My understanding of ‘the SS at the front’ was usually restricted to actual dates, places & weather of their military confrontations, combat, which allowed me most of the time to skirt the facts concerning “The Final Solution“, that the SS owned The Final Solution. Starting just out of high school with Malmedy, with my impression of the world that was not fashioned by true hunger or terror, reading any print about SS (fingers pointed at the 3rd Division Totenkopf) about their consistent killings of people in-their-hands became a bit of a sing-song “The SS this –The SS That!” which sadly did not “get to me” or shook me up. That was then, today I shudder and think about my last thoughts as I lay beaten & naked in an anti-tank ditch waiting for the feelings and sounds that had killed so many just before me…. The SS had to operate above the law to get so much of what they wanted done, with complete co-operation and prompting by their accepted authority. As interesting is trying to “fit” the SS into human history with special emphasis on cause and effect. “Well, what do you expect when a Third Reich pops out of your petri dish?!” Is the SS a strange little blip on the social radar, it cant happen here or now!? How does the title “SS, Alibi of a Nation” strike you? (I suppose the process is much like studying tornados, the tornado represents colliding boundaries of huge amounts of atmospheric heat & humidity in a radius of hundreds of miles, …and then these conditions don’t always yield a tornado.) So the SS started as something viewed as very good, but was eventually declared an illegal institution.
