Hi All. Well first off Emily and I are both sick. Her fever - TopicsExpress

Hi All. Well first off Emily and I are both sick. Her fever peaked at 102.3, mine at just over 101...headache, stuffy head, stiff neck, chills, sore throat. Because of this I have been unable to get by to see Junior today but we have two great updates from the doctor!!! Yesterday, the doctor wanted to speak with us about considering transferring Junior to a facility where he would be given 24 hour care which could run into the thousands of dollars or putting him down if his condition did not improve. The doctor that saw him yesterday is the doctor that owns the practice. He had been on vacation and had vet friends filling in so his first exam of Junior seemed grave to him, but keep in mind he had not seen him on Monday when he first arrived. I went in yesterday and Junior was propped up on his front paws. He was looking around. And when he saw me he tried to come to me but couldnt so I picked him up and held him. He has a spot shaved on his back for doc to give him insulin injections and the right paw is shaved for his fluid IV. As of yesterday hed had three insulin injections and his glucose was just under 700 for the first time so still very high. The staff and myself shared with Dr B the improvements in Junior just in the last two days and while I expressed we could not afford to move him for 24 hour care, we were not prepared to give up on him yet because he is improving. The decision was made to keep him with them and continue with same care, but Dr. B also shaved the left paw last night and gave Junior an IV overnight of a longer acting insulin and his hope was to see the numbers under 600 this morning. if they were not then wed need to make some decisions as they had no idea how long it would take to get the ketones now showing up in his urine out of his system. As of first thing this morning his glucose was down to 484!!! And ketones were for the most part gone. We were so excited and Dr. B said Junior was hissing at him now so he was encouraged. I just called tonight to get an update before closing and got even better news. His glucose is now down to 313, no ketones at all, and both IVs have been removed. He is now getting fluids subcutaneously via a shot under his skin. He is still being force fed but his interest in food is getting stronger as he was fighting them less. He is sitting up, and being quite the feisty patient from what I was told tonight. He is hissing and swatting and irritable. He will get just his regular insulin shot tonight and will be tested again in the morning. It is looking like he is getting closer to being in a safer area and we are optimistic his levels will get under control and Dr. B will find the right dosage for us to continue his care at home. We are of course freaking out over the bill, but they are going to work with us and I am very happy we made the decision to try the treatment. If this little boy comes home then I will have my Christmas miracle and there is truly nothing else I will want in this world. So many of you have shared with me similar stories and some that did not end happy, but all showed the same love for their pets that I feel for Junior. Our little furry friends give us nothing but unconditional love and while I never wished this for him, I am so happy to have had a chance to give back a portion of that love hes given to us over the years. Im just going to continue to pray and believe that he will get better and that hell soon be home and that hell die an old man in his sleep several years from now knowing he was a very loved kitty.
