Hi all.... I have come across a 4 year old staffie boy who we have taken from his 3rd home. He has had a rough life so far and is very nervous, particularly of men. He doesnt like strangers and shows signs of stress such as head down, tail in, continuous liking his lips and chasing his tail. This is so bad that he has taken fur from the end of his tail. When we went to get him, it took at least 30 minutes for him to be brave enough to come near to me. He sat with his back to the door with a fearful growl. Lots of treats and softly spoken praise later, he let me stroke him. We then put his lead on and walked him home. He is in a lovely foster home now and even in two days, he is a little less stressed and seems as though he is relaxing. The foster carers and offered to keep him and we are going to get him assessed by a behavourist, but could anyone give advice as to the best way of stopping the tail chasing? When he does it, we stop him and speak softly, saying calm so he relates that word with rest and tummy tickles. Any other ideas please?
