Hi all! My dog Dusty is fearful of new people and other dogs. Weve had him for about 5 months now and hes made leaps and bounds with meeting new people! Now that one issue is progressing in the right direction, I want to start working on him with other dogs. The shelter told us he lived with an aggressive k9 brother prior to being surrendered (hes 3 years old). He has bite marks and scars all over. He fixates and sometimes starts to shake (like hes shivering) when a dog is too close. Occasionally, hell lunge (mostly at smaller dogs). I treat him like crazy (I wear two treat pouches, one for soft treats and one for kibble -- we feed him 100% of his calories outside to get the most of his food driven personality!) when he sees another dog across the street (hes still under threshold when the dog is across the street) or we hear one bark. We also play the touch/look game to distract him from the trigger. Handfuls and handfuls of food or treats are given to him in these situations! Weve been doing this for the 5 months weve had him without much change in his behavior. Unfortunately, we dont have any friends with dogs in the area to do open/close bar :( What else can we be doing other than upping the value of the treats?? THANK YOU!
