Hi all, This is the last begging message you will receive from me. That in itself is worth a celebration :-) It’s the day before the fight. Training is over. I have bled, I have had frozen sweat on my forehead. I have endured, amongst many other things, running repeatedly up and down flights of steps with a 40kg weights vest at 6:30am, innumerable step-ups with 50kg, and a 5-minute continuous round of sparring against 5 different fresh opponents, one every minute. I have survived 15 hours of one to one training with an instructor I can only describe as a diabolical sadist (Oliver Hickey) I have nursed myself through bruised ribs, a swollen knee, inflamed cartilage in my nose, and generally being a bit too old for this really. I’ve come out the other side fit, healed, and ready. Tomorrow night is Zero to Hero Fight Night. It’s a white collar boxing program which over the past 10 weeks has trained us with this one aim in mind. I will fight three two minute rounds against another contender at the Rivermead Leisure Centre, in front of 1,500 people. I might lose. I might get knocked out. I think I’ll win. It will all have been worth it, whatever the outcome. Through the very generous donations from friends and colleagues, we have now raised with gift aid included nearly £3,200 for Friends of PICU, which is a wonderful amount that I never expected to approach when I began this journey. Friends of PICU helps to look after the parents of very ill children and babies while they stay in Southampton Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. They really helped my wife and I through an unbearable three weeks before we lost our son Samuel last year, and I know that every penny donated to them will make a difference to parents at one of the most difficult times of their lives.
