Hi everyone! Thank you for all the support and well wishes for the past few days. Many have ask me why I want to run for a 2nd term, why not go off on an exchange or whether giving 1 year of service as BIZCOM President and SMUSA Business Secretary is already enough. My very simple answer is: “Not everything, not yet” Ok, aside that quote from Batman, I still feel that I have more to contribute to the SMUSA ExCo. It is always easier to say that I’m done, to walk away from public eye, to enjoy exchange in cold countries and the escape from the BELL CURVE. Yet, even after one year, I can still feel that burning passion to serve. This past year, I have seen how the ExCo and the Council can make a change to SMU. Offices do consult us on various issues, ranging from academic to even the lack of food choices. This is something that I would like to build upon – more meetings with the relevant offices, to ensure that they do consult us where student welfare are concerned, to show that as ExCo, Council, we truly represent the students. My mission is to build the SMUSA family heartware through P.I.E (Passion.Interaction.Efficiency). I see the SMU community as a family – everyone is less than 6 degrees apart (mutual friends are certainly plenty given how small we are). Yet, in this rat race to attain the fabled 4.3, sometimes we neglected our friends. There are many opportunities in SMU to take part in activities with your friends, be it a trekking expedition or a gourmet race around Singapore. In chasing grades, we seem to forget that University is the one last time you get to be a student. This is another thing I want to see change in SMU, but I will admit that it can’t be achieve in 1 or even 2 terms! Changing mindsets, how we approach university, how we see student life in SMU is something that needs to be change gradually over time. One idea that I pushed for this Semester is the SMUSA Back-To-School initiative. The entire idea is to let students know that there is so much more than being a student in SMU. Games, bazaar, welfare drives and even Freshmen Bash are there to let students and freshmen know that SMU is more than a place to mug. I would love to see this initiative continue and evolve into something bigger, something that include all other CCA activities taking place within the first 2 weeks of SMU. Amidst all the EDMs we receive daily from Offices, OCSPs, CCAs, it is easy to get lost trying to navigate the events landscape of SMU, which further contributed to events search cost. SMUSA ExCO should be a facilitator of student life, where students can turn to us to know what is happening this week, this month. One way to accomplish this is to build on a weekly SMUSA update that the current ExCo is going to send out. Our website should be a true one-stop place for everything student life. And this means working with OSL and all the CCA clubs to promote their events. On the topic of update, the I in P.I.E mean interaction not only with students but also offices. To be true representatives of students, we need to know what the student concerns for certain issues are. Perhaps through weekly updates, the ExCo can bring some issues to be discussed with officers and seek feedback from students. It’ll not be easy and response will not be many, but it will represent a small step forward in improving student interaction with the SMUSA ExCo. And of course, these are not promises of change for it will be simply pandering to the students just for a vote. But this is an assurance that I will push for these refinements and improvements to the SMUSA ExCo if elected for another year. Rome isn’t built in one day, there is little use for promises of radical changes. What I can truly promise all of you is all of my time, energy and devotion to SMUSA for the next year. Thank you for reading this (very) lengthy stauts :)
