Hidden Gems of Russia - The Baroque Church in Dubrovitsy Before a swamp in northeastern Russia transformed into St. Petersburg, Russia’s first “window on the West” opened just outside Moscow. Prince Boris Golitsyn, Peter the Great’s teacher, built a church at the Dubrovitsy estate in 1690, seeking to mend his troubled relationship with the tsar. A scandalous hint of the Westernization to come, the Church of the Sign of the Most Holy Mother of God was built by foreign artisans in an ornate Baroque style that was unmistakably Catholic. Upon seeing the church, the Russian patriarch refused to bless it. The church still stands today, a unique testament to the ambitions of Peter’s age. Unfortunately, the adjoining estate, which used to operate a small museum, is currently closed for visitation.
