Historical Significance of Album Collecting in Iran, India and Beyond The album pages displayed in this exhibition demonstrate how art collecting and connoisseurship reinforced political and cultural legitimacy. The collection of miniature paintings and calligraphic compositions and their compilation into albums for the private enjoyment of kings and courtiers were popular pursuits in the Safavid and Mughal periods as demonstrations of the cultural refinement of the court. These royal collecting practices travelled from the Timurid court in Herat, to #Safavid Iran, and then to the #Mughals in India, where the British also later adopted the practice of compiling albums in imitation of cultured Indian elites. As a result of their historical importance and distinguished origins, these miniature paintings and dispersed album pages are valuable and significant parts of MIA’s collection.
