Ho. Ho. Ho. Happy Holidays my friends! Wishing you love, laughter and lots of sparkle for your life. If you are still dashing about looking for the perfect holiday gift, I have a few ideas. 1. Give the gift of “Presence”. Not just taking up space while checking your iphone but I mean be truly present for another. A favorite book of mine called “The Sovereignty of Love” defines presence like this: “When we break down the word “presence” we have “pre-essence” with “pre” meaning “presenting”, presence translates as “the presentation of essence”. Since love is our true essence, presence means “presenting my love”. What loved one wouldn’t want you to show up “presenting your love” and being fully “present”? I think that is the best gift of all! 2. The Gift of Time. For a few years, my brother gave me the best gift ever! He gave me a certificate for a “Handyman Day”. My brother is one of those guys that can fix almost anything and remodel a kitchen by himself. This is not what he does for a living. He is actually a very talented teacher. But the gift of having him come and fix all those little things that were bugging me like a stuck window, changing air conditioner filters, fixing the light bulb I can’t get unscrewed or the tv remote that I messed up the settings on again, is just awesome! I could get that same gift for the rest of my life and be happy. This would work equally well if your friend or family member wants a Facebook page set up or pictures uploaded to Shutterfly. Those skills that come so easily to you that you dont give a second thought about, can mean the world to another. 3. The gift of a lesson. This is a little like the gift of time but instead of doing something FOR someone, you use your skill set and do it WITH them. Instead of bringing someone a cake, you teach them how to bake it. Show someone how to really use their ipad or spend an hour with them showing them best camera apps for their phone and teaching them how to use them. A client did this for me last summer and it was literally LIFE CHANGING! I still give her props. 4. Love the pet. There is a saying “ a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” well, the way to a women’s heart is through her dog (or cat). I love my dogs Cody and Lexi to the moon and back. I know I’m not the only pet owner that feels like this. Anyone who has taken pictures or short videos (even on an iphone) of my dogs and sent them to me, wins my heart. Bonus points if they were printed out. I am also thrilled when friends bring presents for them. Those 3 tennis balls, that healthy dog treat or a stuffed toy from the sale bin, brings me mountains of joy! To see Cody and Lexi squeak their toys will entertain me for far too long! 5. Music. Sure, you could always buy someone a CD or itunes card but you know what is WAY better? A curated playlist. Remember mixed tapes? That was always the coolest thing when someone took the time to make them. Then came CD’s that someone burned for you, also awesome. Now, a itunes and Spotify makes things easier to organize your music but not necessarily easier to choose new music if you dont spend hours listening to stuff. I have a friend that is really good with music, always finding cool new bands. Me not so much. I still love Beyonce and Pussycat Dolls and can listen to the same songs for years! But I do also love new stuff, I just dont make the time to discover it. I would so so so LOVE it if someone sent me a curated playlist, keeping my tastes (dance/pop) in mind. What a great gift. The holidays are a chance to express your love and show someone you care. It doesn’t take a lot of dollars in the bank to do this. Presence. Time. Skills.
